Frequently, treating a condition or illness will entail surgery such as recovering after an injury, rotator cuff surgery, a fractured bone, or healing from a herniated disc. Unfortunately, after a procedure has been performed limitations in performing daily activities, self-care, ability to work and pain are common side effects. Since the surgeon had to make at least a single incision to gain access to the affected tissue this is not surprising. However, physical therapy can assist in restoring function to pre-injury levels thus minimizing post-surgical pain and disability. Our therapists can help you regain mobility, strength, flexibility and coordination thereby restoring your life to normal functional levels. At RestoreRehab Physical Therapy, our therapists utilize Evidence Based Practice strategies such as Clinical Pilates, manual therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises to reach your goals in returning to normalcy.
Following surgery, our Physical Therapists will work with your surgeon in following your surgeon’s rehabilitation protocol or will design and implement an individualized treatment plan just for you. The goal of our treatment interventions is to restore a patient’s pre-surgical function, strength, and mobility. Goals will be agreed upon by the physical therapist and you following a thorough physical examination and evaluation . Our Physical Therapists have extensive training in post-surgical treatment for an array of surgical procedures including:
Immediately after a successful surgery, your doctor may want you to begin moving the joint or walking. You will work with one of our the physical therapists to perform simple exercises to improve joint mobility and reduce all signs of inflammation (swelling, pain, redness, increased temperature). Simultaneously, our therapists will utilize manual therapy techniques to reduce and minimize scar tissue formation, to promote relaxation of muscles affected, and to reduce swelling which may have been caused or exacerbated by the surgery. Exercises will continue to help gradually ease and progress you into a more strenuous exercise program. The exercise program will be tailored to your specific job, daily activities, and sport. We utilize a customized and adapted form of The Pilates Method in addressing your postsurgical rehabilitation.
